The Pet Travel Packing Checklist
A simple checklist of what to pack and prepare before your pet’s trip — whether it’s across town or across the country.
Getting your pet ready for a trip is a lot easier with a list. Here’s a practical checklist you can use before handing your pet off for transport.
Documents
- Vaccination records — keep a copy (paper or a photo on your phone).
- Health certificate, if your trip or airline requires one. Ask your veterinarian how far in advance it must be issued.
- Your contact info and the receiving person’s contact info, written down and shared with your transporter.
Food and medication
- Your pet’s regular food, pre-portioned in labeled bags. Sudden food changes can upset a pet’s stomach.
- Medications in their original containers, with clear written instructions (dose, time, with or without food).
- Any treats your pet is used to.
Comfort items
- A familiar blanket or t-shirt that smells like home.
- A favorite toy (one that is safe to leave unsupervised).
Gear
- A secure collar or harness with ID tags that show your phone number.
- A leash.
- If you’re providing your own crate or carrier, make sure it is the right size: your pet should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
Information to share
Tell your transporter about anything that helps them care for your pet:
- Feeding schedule and amounts
- Bathroom habits and cues
- Fears or triggers (other dogs, loud noises, being picked up)
- Medical conditions and your veterinarian’s contact info
Tip: A short walk and a bathroom break right before pickup helps your pet start the trip relaxed.
